One of the most important skills you need for a successful  graduate study is writing skill. This is because you are going to be faced with several writing tasks throughout your graduate program. These writing tasks will vary in style and complexity.

On the face of it, “writing” may sound simple as everyone has typically been writing since pre-school days. However in this case it’s not just writing but about academic writing. Academic writing is a basic necessity for scholars, especially active in the academia. It allows you to communicate your ideas, thoughts and findings in a manner that is clear and understandable by other scholars within or outside your field.

To be an excellent scholar and yet have poor writing skills is almost an irony as you are judged, viewed and assessed by not just what you’ve written but how you’ve written it. The “how” encompasses the conformity of the written information to a set of academic standards which have been upheld as standard ways of disseminating information.

Academic writing takes several factors into consideration. Some of which includes:

  • Purpose
  • Audience
  • Organization
  • Style
  • Flow
  • Presentation

All these factors affect how a scholar’s write up is received, assessed, judged and criticised.

One basic form of academic writing you must deal with is that of writing a thesis. This is inescapable for any graduate student, unless of course you are undertaking your doctoral study through the concurrent publication route. To the average student this might look like a herculean task however with seasoned and experienced mentors it might just be easy to deal, although not a walk over. That is why the African Scholars Forum webinar is a must for every graduate student who wants to write excellently. The webinar is designed to demystify the art of writing giving you the necessary tools to write excellently. The resource persons are seasoned scholars who know what it takes to write an excellent thesis judging from their own scholarly articles and that of their mentees.

The renowned English physicist, Isaac Newton once said “if I have seen farther than others it is by standing upon the shoulder of giants”. Thus I am forced to say “if you must write well, then you must stand on the shoulders of seasoned and experienced scholars and mentors”. Don’t waste any more time. Go and register for the webinar and you’ll be glad you did.
